Musical Memories Monday – The Purple People Eater

Well, this one wraps up fun  songs for the month of April. Sheb Wooley wrote and performed this version of the novelty song and launched it in 1958. Wooley based the song on a story his friend’s child told him. You might enjoy listening for the ambiguity in the song about a “one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater.”

More recently, the purple creature appeared in a kid’s movie in the 80’s and the Chipmunks performed it in the late 90’s. If you want to know more about Wooley, follow the link in the first paragraph. He led an interesting life.

Did you catch the ambiguity and the nods to other songs of that era?

My parents bought this and we played it so many times! Our family had so much fun with this song. Definitely a bygone era. Things are not the same anymore!

You can say that again, DR. Several generations have passed since the Age of (Relative) Innocence. But I am moving forward with what we have, and finding the connections. Music is a reflection of the culture and the era.

Oh yes, I agree. It is really fun, too, to make constant discoveries since that age. Both backward and forward.

  2. Haha! I like what they did with the effects and vocals. But I can’t say I catch any nods, you know.

I almost thought was Elvis Presley.
